Jazz rap is a subgenre alive with inspiration- rewriting hip hop as a new sound saturated with jazz samples from the past. A Tribe Called Quest were pioneers, and this publication explores their album ‘The Low End Theory’. The publication works chronologically through the album tracklist. Each sample speaks through collated imagery. Experimental typography becomes the lyricism, creating a dynamic type-image balance that becomes the music. A layered compliation communicating layered sound. This publication brings elements together from different places, whether that be in visual or methodological terms, in the same way that jazz rap has unioned hip hop and jazz.
